    Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen discovered in 1895 ‘Ein neue Art von Strahlen’. This electromagnetic radiation is generated when electrons collide with a piece of metal with a high speed. Röntgen made his discovery more or less by accident, when he was working with a gas discharge tube after the design of Crookes. He had set the electric voltage too high. This formerly unknown type of radiation (at first called X-rays, later also röntgen rays), appeared to have a very high penetration power. The bone structure of people, when X-rayed, could be made visible and crystal structures could be unravelled too with röntgen rays. Röntgen received in 1901 the (first) Nobel Prize for physics.     Sensational: that is what the discovery which Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen made by accident in 1895, could well be called. During his research into gas discharge tubes he discovered some kind of radiation, unknown until then, which he called ‘X-rays’. When this radiation, invisible for the human eye, comes into contact with a fluorescent screen, the screen will fluoresce. The most spectacular was the fact that when a hand was held before the screen, the bone structure of the hand could be seen on the screen. Thus Röntgen made a photograph of his wife's hand. In 1901 Röntgen received the Nobel prize for this discovery.     The earth's atmosphere lets visible sunlight pass, but it lets many other ‘kinds’ of light (or better ‘electromagnetical radiation’) not or only partially pass. The air molecules absorb, for example, certain röntgen rays. This röntgen-vacuum-spectrograph was made to measure the intensity of X-rays in that range not visible to the eye. The design is from Karl Manne Georg Siegbahn (1886-1978), a Swedish physicist who received the Nobel Physics prize for his discoveries in the field of röntgen spectroscopy in 1924. In 1923 this tube was used in the laboratory of Teylers Stichting to investigate the influence of the chemical bond of the air molecules on the absorption of röntgen rays. Afterwards this work was continued at the Physical Laboratory of the state University of Groningen.     Sam Coffman, Research Archaeologist at the UAMuseum of the North, visited the Maxine & Jesse Whitney Museum at PWSC to investigate the arrowheads on display. Part of his research included the use of non-destructive portable X-ray Fluorescence (pXRF) geochemical to source the different types of rhyolite and obsidian. Over the course of two days, Sam painstakingly aimed a hair dryer-sized ray gun and scanned 53 spear points. Each scan took several minutes and resulted in a computer readout of all the elements and their percentages in or on that point. From these elemental signatures, he can research from which known sources of obsidian and rhyolite each point likely originated and potentially discover where in the world they came from.
